The term decides most of what a trailer loan costs
Travel trailers are often financed for 10 to 15 years, and fifth wheels, which cost more, sometimes for 20. The longer term makes the payment manageable, but you pay for it. Financing $40,500 at 8% APR costs $491 a month over 10 years with $18,465 in interest. Over 15 years the payment falls to $387 and the interest climbs to $29,167.
Watch for negative equity. After five years of that 15-year loan you would still owe about $31,900. If the trailer loses 20% in its first year and 6% a year after that, it would be worth about $28,107. Selling or trading in at that point means bringing cash to cover the difference.

Costs a trailer loan does not show
- A tow vehicle. If your current vehicle cannot safely tow the trailer's loaded weight, the truck is part of the purchase.
- Hitch and brake controller. Weight-distribution hitches and brake controllers are often added at the dealer and financed with the trailer.
- Insurance and storage. Use the fields under "What owning it costs" on the main RV loan calculator to add them to your monthly total.
- Title, registration and dealer fees. These vary by state and dealer; add them to the price if you are financing them.
Frequently asked questions
How long can you finance a travel trailer?
Up to 20 years at some lenders for larger loans: Alliant Credit Union offers RV terms up to 240 months. Many lenders require a minimum amount for long terms; Navy Federal Credit Union requires $30,000 or more for terms over 84 months.
Is a fifth wheel financed the same way?
Yes. Lenders treat fifth wheels as towable RVs, with the same kinds of rates and terms as travel trailers. Use this calculator with the fifth wheel's price.
What rate should I enter?
Published credit union RV rates currently start at 7.14% for a 120-month term at Alliant Credit Union, for borrowers with excellent credit. Use a higher rate if your credit is fair or the trailer is several years old. See current RV loan rates.
