Depreciation is not a monthly bill, but it is a cost: assuming a 20% drop in year one and 6% a year after that, a $150,000 RV would be worth about $93,690 after five years. Compare that with the $107,334 you would still owe on the loan at that point.

Long terms, big interest

Because motorhome loans are large, lenders offer long terms. Alliant Credit Union lists RV loans up to 240 months, at 8.39% APR as its lowest 20-year rate, and 7.89% for 144 to 180 months. On a $150,000 loan, the 15-year option at 7.89% costs $1,424 a month and $106,314 in interest. The 20-year option at 8.39% costs $1,291 a month and $159,915 in interest.

Extra payments are the simplest way to cut that cost. Adding $200 a month to the 20-year loan pays it off in 14 years 7 months and saves $49,887. Check that your loan has no prepayment penalty first.

Class A, B and C: what changes for the loan

Class A

Bus-style coaches are the most expensive motorhomes, so they are the most likely to qualify for 20-year terms. Check the lender's maximum loan amount: Alliant Credit Union lends up to $400,000 and NASA Federal Credit Union up to $125,000.

Class B

Camper vans usually cost less than Class A coaches, so the loans are smaller and terms are often 10 to 15 years. They are also the most fuel-efficient motorhomes, which lowers the running-cost estimate under the calculator.

Class C

Built on a truck or van chassis with a cab-over bunk, Class C motorhomes sit between the two on price. Enter your actual fuel economy in the ownership section; it varies widely with chassis and engine.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical motorhome loan?

Ten to fifteen years is common for motorhomes, and 20 years is available from some lenders for large loans. The longest terms usually carry a slightly higher rate.

Can I deduct motorhome loan interest?

Possibly. A motorhome has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities, so it can count as a second home for the mortgage interest deduction if the loan is secured by it and you itemize. See the rules.

Do older motorhomes cost more to finance?

Usually. NASA Federal Credit Union adds 1 percentage point for model years 2016–2021 and 2 points for 2015 and older.
