When refinancing an RV loan pays off

Refinancing replaces your loan with a new one, ideally at a lower rate. It is worth doing when the interest you save is bigger than the fees, and when you keep the RV long enough to get past the break-even point.

Say you owe $48,000 at 10.5% with 108 payments left, and you are offered 8% for the same 108 months with $400 in fees. Your payment drops by $64 a month, you recover the fees in 7 months, and you save $6,506 overall.

The trap is the longer term. Take the same 8% offer over 180 months instead and the payment falls by $230, but you pay $8,573 more in total than if you had kept your current loan. A lower payment is not the same as a cheaper loan.

Before you apply

  • Get your payoff amount from your current lender. It differs from the statement balance by the interest accrued since your last payment.
  • Check for a prepayment penalty on the current loan and add it to the fees.
  • Ask about the RV's age. Lenders price older units higher: NASA Federal Credit Union adds 1 to 2 percentage points for older model years, which can erase the gain on an older RV.
  • Ask whether the rate differs for refinances. Alliant Credit Union adds 1% when refinancing a loan it already holds.
  • Compare at least three offers within a couple of weeks; credit scoring models generally count multiple inquiries for the same kind of loan close together as one.

Frequently asked questions

How much lower should the rate be to refinance?

There is no fixed rule. Enter the real offer with its fees: if the net savings are positive and the break-even point comes well before you expect to sell, it is worth considering.

Can I refinance an RV that is upside down?

It is harder. Many lenders cap the loan at a share of the RV's value, so you may need to pay down the difference in cash to refinance.

Does refinancing hurt my credit?

Applying causes a hard inquiry, which usually lowers a score slightly for a short time. Opening the new loan also lowers the average age of your accounts.
