RV loan term calculator

A longer RV loan lowers the payment and raises everything else: the rate, the total interest, and the time you spend owing more than the RV is worth. Compare every term at once.

Lenders usually charge more for longer terms. See published rates by term.

Equity = estimated value minus balance owed, assuming the RV loses 20% in year one and 6% a year after that. A negative number means you would owe more than the RV is worth.

10, 15 or 20 years at real published rates

Alliant Credit Union publishes a different rate for each term: 7.14% for 10 years, 7.89% for 15 and 8.39% for 20. On a $90,000 loan, that works out to:

TermAPRPaymentTotal interest
10 years7.14%$1,051$36,178
15 years7.89%$854$63,789
20 years8.39%$775$95,949

Going from 10 to 20 years cuts the payment by $277 a month and adds $59,771 in interest.

Which RV loan term fits

  • 5 to 7 years suits smaller loans, campers and anyone who can handle the payment. Rates are lowest and you build equity fastest.
  • 10 to 12 years is the common middle ground for travel trailers and fifth wheels.
  • 15 to 20 years is mainly for large motorhome loans. Lenders set minimum amounts: Navy Federal Credit Union requires at least $30,000 financed for terms over 84 months.

If you take a long term for the lower payment, you can still pay it down faster: extra payments go to principal. Check that the loan has no prepayment penalty.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 20-year RV loan a good idea?

Only if you need the lower payment and plan to keep the RV a long time. You will pay much more interest and owe more than the RV is worth for years, which makes selling early expensive.

What is the most common RV loan term?

Smaller loans are usually 5 to 7 years. Larger loans for travel trailers and motorhomes commonly run 10 to 15 years.
