RV sales tax calculator

Sales tax on an RV is charged on the full purchase price and can add thousands to what you owe. Estimate it for your state and see what financing it costs.

City and county tax, if any.

Pay it up front if you can

Most buyers roll the sales tax into the loan, which means paying interest on it for the whole term. Financing $5,000 of tax at 8% for 15 years adds about $3,601 in interest. If you have the cash, paying the tax at signing is one of the simplest ways to cut the cost of the loan.

Things that change your RV tax bill

  • Local taxes. Many states let cities and counties add their own rate. Add it in the calculator.
  • Vehicle taxes instead of sales tax. Some states tax motor vehicles, and sometimes RVs, under a separate title, excise or privilege tax with its own rate. Check with your state's motor vehicle agency.
  • Where you register it. Tax is generally based on where the RV is registered, not where you buy it. Buying in a no-tax state usually does not avoid your home state's tax.
  • Trade-ins. Many states tax only the price after a trade-in is subtracted; some do not.
  • Federal deduction. If you itemize and deduct sales tax instead of state income tax, the tax on a vehicle can be added. See the rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do you pay sales tax on a used RV?

Generally yes, including on private-party sales in most states; it is often collected when you title and register the RV.

Can I avoid sales tax by buying an RV in another state?

Usually not. Your home state typically collects its tax when you register the RV there, sometimes with credit for tax already paid elsewhere.
